We enjoyed two interesting presentations last week, both benefactors of our Foundation Grants funded by the Youth Auction. First, Alyce Kelley, Director of the Library, explained how they had deployed the $1600 grant they received from us. It is a real challenge to keep reference materials up to date. So they have ordered a new version of World Book Encyclopedia, a People and World Atlas and a subscription to an on-line database. Alyce explained that the library has been very busy of late, with summer traffic up nearly 25%. They are seeing upwards of 6,000 items per month being checked out by their 5,000 patrons. They are seeing increase in home-schoolers using the library as their primary resource. In the future, the library expects to join a 14 library consortium within a year or so which will greatly increase their capabilities. As for other immediate needs, Alyce says a new computer for the children's area would be near the top of the list.
Second, we heard from the team of Necia Hunter, Taylor Larson and Shannon Wall, from Emmett High School, who recently returned from Washington DC for the National History Day Competition. Their entry was entitled "Women Working to Win the War". It focused on the role of Women in WWII and how the skills they learning provided for new career opportunities and really changed the labor landscape in the US. While in DC they enjoyed the opportunity to "see the sights". Good job, girls! That was a lot of work!
